IL MONDO IN UNA STANZA
LA VENARIA REALE
The World in a Room. Precious testimonies of non-European cultures from the collections of the University of Turin, exhibits in the Atelier of the Halls of Arts a selection of objects from the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the University of Turin (MAET), whose complex biographies evoke some crucial moments in world history: the discovery, colonisation and evangelisation of indigenous societies, violence, exploitation, but also the encounter between cultures and the emergence of new global scenarios.
At the centre of the exhibition are two Zemí, ancient sacred objects dating back to the 13th and 15th centuries of the Taíno people who welcomed Columbus to the island he christened Hispaniola before dying out within a few decades.
The second section of the exhibition presents the ancient civilisations of sub-Saharan Africa, represented by a selection of Congolese statuettes and artefacts acquired in the colonial context. There is also a third section of ornaments, diadems and ceremonial weapons of the Bororo of Mato Grosso, decorated with brightly coloured feathers, evidence of an extraordinary artistic tradition.
